Carl Orff’s famous 1936 work sets the brilliant and bawdy writings of 13th century monks and bards to primal, pulse-pounding music. Ranging from simple chants to almost rock-inspired rhythms, Carmina Burana is not-so-typical concert fare.
From 13th century monastic manuscripts come themes of love, lust, the pleasures of drinking and the heightened moods evoked by springtime. At times exquisitely beautiful, and then crude and unsubtle (nicely camouflaging almost X-rated lyrics with erudite Latin and old German texts), the music juxtaposes the extremes of huge orchestral forces and the purity of solo voice. Often used in advertising and movie soundtracks, Carmina Burana has become one of the most recognised works of all times. This highly evocative score has lasting popularity with both choirs and audiences worldwide, and will be brought to life by the 140 performers of the Nelson Civic Choir and Orchestra under the baton of Pete Rainey, featuring stunning Russian soprano Viktoriya Dodoka. Experience the middle ages with a musical feast of lovers, heroes, scoundrels, and lashings of flowers and fair maidens.
