Young, aspiring classical singerSubmitted by chocoholic_chic92 on September 24, 2010 - 23:04.
Hello, my name is Kayla, and I am 17 years old. I have been taking singing lessons for around 3-4 years now and have decided to pursue classical singing as a career. I have been studying music since I was quite young, but my family never expected that I would do it as a career as we are quite an ordinary family, I am the first to go to university. Only in the last few years have I had the confidence in myself through the help of others to think that I could succeed in the area of music, and so I have been working very hard with my singing, piano, viola, and general music studies. I am planning to study classical singing at university next year. I recently had my first audition, and did not get in as I was not as prepared for the audition as I thought I was, and was also quite sick, as well as the chances of getting in being very slim. I have more auditions coming up. These are my questions: 1)Any audition tips and things I should know? Thanks! |

P.S.
Note: I am building up experience by doing singing competitions (local) where I have achieved well, most recently winning 2 first prizes, which gave me 2 scholarships and 2 trophies. I also have done other competitions to extend myself, however, my lack of experience has meant I have not done as well in those. I am doing NZQA Scholarship music in Performance, and a local scholarship run by a Society for Music Education.
Aria competition
If you send me your email address, I can send you a syllabus for our competitions in August. The syllabus comes out in February. The competitions include the Nelson Vocal Recital and Aria competition (previously the "Sealord Aria") and is a good experience and a chance to win good prizes.
In 2010 total prizes were $ 4800, but in 2011 we strive for well over $8000.00.
The Vocal Recital is held during a catered event in a cabaret-style ambience of a ballroom in an old mansion in Nelson and is really a "salon concert"; the aria competition (a maximum of eight recitalists can be nominated for that) is the following evening in the Nelson School of Music (a "big concert" hall event).
Apart from that, there are several open vocal classes in the same weekend and you might still be eligable to enter in the 17 and 18 year old classes (it is 5, 6, 7 August 2011).
Please send you email address to: wim@sound-advice.co.nz and I will send the syllabus in February.
Kind Regards

Thank you
Unfortunately I did not see this comment until now but I would potentially be interested for 2012.
Thanks :)
