Angela Brown & Gregg Baker in Auckland!

The first time I heard of Angela Brown was on the cover of the New York Times last November. I like Cinderella stories, and I've been casually tracking her career since. To my utter surprise, she's been here *twice* performing for the Auckland Philharmonia, and a friend who has seen her says she's "jaw-droppingly incredible". Big words, but since my friend doesn't usually go for hyperbole, it's definitely a considerable recommendation. Anyway, I'm trying my best to stem this great anticipation while I cross off days in my calendar, waiting for her upcoming concert with Gregg Baker at the Aotea. What if those countless raves from overseas are wrong?
Still I'm going because if she *is* the best Aida working today (Aprille Millo's career having been past the use by date), then I sure wouldn't want to miss it. And I must say that an Aida that doesn't have to apply dark makeup with a paint roller does have a certain appeal.

Also, I was sure I've heard Gregg Baker's name before, and then I remembered: he plays Crown in the Porgy and Bess DVD directed by Trevor Nunn. Those who want a sneak peek can borrow it at the Auckland Central Library. He looks and sounds great.

I managed to see a bus and truck production of Porgy & Bess from the America a few years ago. Man, it didn't sound great. So the Gershwinites should get a kick out of hearing these excerpts sung well reputedly by two of the most promising voices working now. I myself will be going for the Aida, wondering what it was like for audiences who heard a young Leontyne Price sing the role for the first time, and hoping that what I'm witnessing what could possibly be the birth of the Aida of our age.

Anybody else going?
