Auckland Opera Studio—Beyond the Box
Submitted by NZ Opera News on April 5, 2006 - 10:46.
Date/Time: Saturday 29 April 2006 8:00pm Location: Mercury Theatre, Auckland Auckland Opera Studio is paring a talented group of New Zealand singers
with respected choreographer and dancer Michael Parmenter and the
Auckland Chamber Ochestra to present a dynamic evening of opera and
dance. Stage director Patrice Wilson, in keeping with the ethos of the
Auckland Opera Studio and her own naked approach to opera and to
Brecht’s stripped away style, puts the focus of this piece on the
singers, with a cast of youg dramatic performers who play out the many
faces and present the ‘sins’ as a kinetic ballet for voices. The
first part of the programme presents the opera Seven Deadly Sins by
German composer Kurt Weill (1900-1950) and German poet, playwright and
theatrical reformer Bertolt Brecht who developed the Epic Theatre (it
asks the audience to be more than just the unseen spectator in the
theatrical illusion). This is then juxtaposed with the exquisite music
of Schoenberg’s String Quartet No. 2, Opus 10. This evening promises to be exciting, perhaps outside the box of your usual night at the Opera. For further information phone 027 291 9953.
